Multiple sclerosis and demyelinating diseases
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disorder of the central nervous system where inflammation destroys nerve cells. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder, which means the person's own immune system attacks the lining (myelin) of nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord causing demyelination. Symptoms are based on the areas of the brain and spinal cord affected. MS is classified based on the timing and progression of symptoms (clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing remitting, primary progressive, secondary progressive). There is no known cause and no cure. There are numerous treatments (infusions, injections, pills) that can modify and reduce the progression of the disease.
